Important advice for the 1st year engineering students

Are you an engineering student? Have you recently joined an engineering college? Here are 3 points that will help you make the best out of your four years of engineering. It will help you stay ahead of the competition and become an excellent engineer at the end of these four years.

1. Learn beyond the classrooms

During the 4 years of engineering doesn't only stick to what is just taught in class. Learn and build skills from outside the class curriculum as well.

Examples: Let's say if you are an electronic or computer science student or from any other similar branches. If yes, then you can learn to build Internet of Things (IoT) or Machine Learning (ML) projects.

These are just 2 examples (IoT and ML) I gave you. I am not saying you can stick to only these but more importantly, go ahead learn things which just beyond your classroom don't stick to just what is taught in your syllabus or covered as part of your exams or curriculum program.

If you are not aware of what is IoT or ML, then here is a little explanation.

A. What is Internet of Things or IoT ?

IoT is a technology by which we connect physical devices to the internet. e.g. You can take a smartphone and press a button to turn on your room lights. Amazon's dash button can be pushed to add an order your cart automatically.

B. What is Machine Learning or ML?

Machine learning enables the computers to learn from data, and even improve themselves, without being explicitly programmed. It lets you automatically predict the future values of any data or can automatically detect any anomalies in the data values.

2. Build a lot of hands-on projects

Engineering is about making projects and products and not just answering theory exams. It is the projects that you build with your engineering knowledge that impact the real world.

Examples: An exciting project I recently built was a smart light bulb which I can control with voice. I can say "Ok Google! Turn off the lights", and the lights will be switched off. I built this because I never liked to walk over to my switchboard and switch off the lights at night before I sleep.

Another project that I build was to monitor my plant. I always used to forget watering the plant, so I connected a sensor which continuously monitors the moisture level in the pot. Whenever the moisture level drops below a certain level, it will immediately send out an SMS to me saying that its time to water the plant. You can even extend this system such that it helps the farmers.

It's always great to build projects which solve your day to day life problems. You can also build projects that are useful for society.

3. Take up Internships

You must get some industry exposure while you are studying engineering. That's precisely where the internships will help you. In many of the colleges now internship is made compulsory. They have realised that the students who go through an internship are the ones who get the best job opportunities.

Now, when it comes to internships, you need to apply for them, and only a few students get selected by the companies. If you speak to your seniors, you will know that a lot fewer students get selected for internships then the number of students who apply for them.

To ensure that companies select you for the internships, need to make the previous two points, i.e. learn beyond what is taught in class and also build a lot of hands-on projects. This will help you build an excellent CV and ensure that companies hire you for Internships.

How to get started with building hands-on projects and learning what is taught beyond the classrooms?

Here is a short, actionable point. If you want to build hands-on projects or learn more concepts of engineering, then I suggest you take up training. Make sure that the training also includes hands-on industrial projects. Many companies in India offer such training.

We at Bolt IoT also offer an IoT and ML training which will be an ideal choice for you. This training covers 14 different projects that you will build as part of it. What's more? The training fee also includes a hardware kit worth Rs.2,750/- that will help you build these projects.

I would highly recommend you to visit shop.boltiot.com now and know more about the training.
